St. Patrick’s Day Free A2 ESL Lesson Reading Text with Phrasal Verbs and Mixed Tenses

St. Patrick’s Day is on March 17th. It is one of the most famous celebrations in the world. People are celebrating this special day today in many different countries.

St. Patrick was a very important man in Ireland. He grew up in Britain, but people took him to Ireland when he was young. He set up churches and schools there and taught people about Christianity. People in Ireland loved him very much. He passed away on March 17th and that is why we celebrate on this day.

On St. Patrick’s Day, people put on their green clothes and go out to big parades. Green is the colour of Ireland because the country has a lot of green grass and trees. People are also wearing shamrocks today. A shamrock is a small green plant with three leaves. St. Patrick used it in his teaching a long time ago.

Families are getting together today to eat and drink with friends. People are walking, dancing, and listening to traditional Irish music in the streets. It is a very lively day.

St. Patrick’s Day is also very big in America. Many Irish people moved there a long time ago and brought their traditions with them. In Chicago, people are dyeing the river green today. The tradition started in 1962 and it is still going on today.

People all over the world are joining in this year. It is a day to celebrate Irish culture and history.
