A Crime in California
Rolando and Maria Corpuz are a husband and wife. They live in San Diego, California. They own two homes for old people.
Some workers live and work in these homes. The workers help old people every day. They cook, clean, and give medicine.
But Rolando and Maria do bad things to the workers. The workers work 24 hours a day. They do not rest. The workers get less than $7 for one hour of work. This is not enough money.
Rolando and Maria tell the workers: “Work, or we call immigration.” The workers are scared. They do not speak.
Now, Rolando and Maria go to a courtroom. A judge listens to the case. Rolando and Maria say: “We do nothing wrong.” But the judge says they must stay in California. They cannot travel to other countries.
