Crime in California/ A2 English – Past Simple/ Past Continuous Reading Vocabulary

Rolando and Maria Corpuz are a husband and wife. They live in San Diego, California. They own and run two homes for old people.

Some workers live and work in these homes. The workers look after old people every day. They cook, clean, and give medicine to the residents.

But Rolando and Maria treated the workers very badly. The workers worked all day and all night without a break. They did not get enough sleep. Rolando and Maria paid the workers less than $7 an hour. They took away most of their wages. This was not fair.

Rolando and Maria threatened the workers. They said: “Work, or we will call immigration.” The workers were very scared. They did not speak up because they were afraid.

The police found out about the crime and arrested Rolando and Maria. Now, a judge is looking into the case. Rolando and Maria said: “We did nothing wrong.” But the judge ordered them to stay in California. They gave up their passports. They cannot go away.
