It was June 1989. A husband and wife were on a boat trip when something terrible happened. Some whales hit their boat and it began to sink. The man and woman quickly got into a small life raft. They were very far from land – about 1,200 miles from Costa Rica. They were completely alone in the ocean.
They stayed on the raft for 66 days, hoping someone would find them. Luckily, they took some useful things from the boat before it sank. They had a special machine that changed sea water into drinking water, so they always had water to drink. They also had tools for fishing, so they could catch fish every day. They couldn’t cook the fish, so they had to eat it uncooked.
After more than two months, some rescue workers finally found them. Both people needed to go to the hospital immediately. Their skin was very red and painful from the sun, and their bodies didn’t have enough water. They had also become very thin – each person lost about 50 pounds because they didn’t have much food.
When they felt better, they made a decision about their next holiday. They wanted to go to the mountains! They didn’t want to see the ocean for a long time. They were very happy and thankful to be home and safe.
