Lost at sea A2/Reading, Vocabulary, Listening Pronunciation, and Grammar Lesson

It was June 1989. A husband and wife were sailing on their boat when they had a terrible accident in the ocean. A group of whales suddenly attacked their boat and it started sinking. The couple quickly jumped into a small rubber raft. They were about 1,200 miles away from the coast of Costa Rica, completely alone in the middle of the ocean.

They spent 66 days floating on the raft, waiting for help. Fortunately, before leaving the boat, they managed to take some important things with them. They had a special pump that could turn salt water into drinking water, so they didn’t die of thirst. They also had fishing equipment, which meant they could catch fish every day. Because they couldn’t cook anything, they had to eat the raw fish.

After more than two months at sea, the coast guard finally found them and rescued them. Both of them needed medical help immediately. They had terrible sunburn and were very dehydrated. They had also lost a lot of weight – about 50 pounds each – because they didn’t have enough food.

When they recovered, they decided that their next vacation would definitely be in the mountains. They didn’t want to see the ocean again for a very long time! They were extremely happy and grateful to be back home safe.
