El Niño is a natural weather phenomenon. It takes place in the Pacific Ocean. The water temperature in the ocean goes up and becomes very warm. This affects the weather in many countries around the world.
Sometimes El Niño is extremely strong. Scientists call this a “Super El Niño.” It does not happen very often. It takes place about five times every one hundred years. The last Super El Niño took place in 2015 and 2016. During that time, many countries dealt with serious weather problems.
Scientists now think a Super El Niño is on the way in 2026. When this happens, some regions receive very heavy rainfall and experience serious flooding. Other areas dry out and become very hot. Storms also get stronger and more dangerous during El Niño.
In the United States, the situation was very different in the north and the south during the last El Niño. The south went through a cold and wet winter. The north had a warm and dry winter. In other parts of the world, some countries ran out of water and others had too much.
A Super El Niño also causes the temperature of the whole Earth to go up. Scientists found out that 2024 was already one of the hottest years in history. They believe 2026 or 2027 could be even hotter.
Scientists set up special equipment to monitor the ocean every day. They study the water temperature carefully. They want to find out how powerful this El Niño is and what it means for our planet.
