The Verb "To Know": Present Simple (All Forms)

know/knows, don't know/doesn't know, and questions

Language Focus

We use know to talk about facts, people, and information we have in our minds.

FormStructureExample
AffirmativeI/you/we/they: know
he/she/it: knows
I know the answer. She knows many languages.
Negativedon't know / doesn't knowI don't know his name. He doesn't know the way.
Yes/No QuestionDo...know...? / Does...know...?Do you know her? Does he know the truth?
Short AnswerYes/No + subject + do/does(n't)Yes, I do. No, she doesn't.
Wh- QuestionWh-word + do/does + subject + know...?What do you know about this? How does she know him?

Remember: "know" is a stative verb – it describes a mental state, not an action. We never use the continuous (-ing) form. "I am knowing the answer" is wrong – the correct form is simply "I know the answer".
