The Verb "To Be": Wh- Questions

What, Where, Who, When, Why, How + am/is/are

Language Focus

We use Wh- question words to ask for specific information, not just Yes or No. The word order is: Wh-word + am/is/are + subject...?

Question wordAsks aboutExample
Whata thingWhat is your name?
Wherea placeWhere are you from?
Whoa personWho is that man?
Whena timeWhen is your birthday?
Whya reasonWhy are you late?
Howa feeling/mannerHow is the weather?

Remember: after the Wh-word, the word order is exactly the same as a Yes/No question – am/is/are still comes before the subject. We answer with real information, not "yes" or "no".
