Language Focus
Irregular verbs don't add "-ed" in the past – they change form completely. Here are 8 common ones:
| Base form | Past form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| go | went | I went to the market. |
| see | saw | She saw a great film. |
| have | had | We had a wonderful time. |
| take | took | He took lots of photos. |
| give | gave | They gave us a gift. |
| come | came | My brother came to visit. |
| eat | ate | I ate traditional food. |
| make | made | She made a nice dinner. |
Sentence structure (using "go" as an example):
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | subject + past form | I went to the party. |
| Negative | subject + didn't + base form | I didn't go to the party. |
| Question | Did + subject + base form...? | Did you go to the party? |
| Short Answer | Yes/No + subject + did/didn't | Yes, I did. No, she didn't. |
Remember: after "did" or "didn't", we always use the base form of the verb, never the past form. "Did you went?" is wrong – it should be "Did you go?"
