Language Focus
At A2 level, we use more precise words to talk about quantity.

| much | Uncountable nouns – questions and negative sentences | How much water are we taking? We don't have much water yet. |
| many | Countable nouns – questions and negative sentences | How many sleeping bags do we have? We don't have many batteries. |
| a little | Uncountable nouns – a small amount, usually enough | There's a little firewood near the fire pit. |
| a few | Countable nouns – a small number, usually enough | We have a few spare batteries in the drawer. |
| enough / not enough | Sufficient / insufficient – any noun type | We have enough matches, so we're ready to go. |
| a couple of | A small number (often two) – countable nouns | Let's buy a couple of bottles on the way. |
Remember: much and many usually appear in questions and negative sentences at this level. In positive sentences, we normally use a lot of instead.
Listening: Packing for a Camping Trip
Jack: Have we got everything for the camping trip?
Sara: I think so. How many sleeping bags do we have?
Jack: We have four sleeping bags, so that should be enough.
Sara: Good. How much water are we taking?
Jack: We don't have much water yet - only two bottles.
Sara: Let's buy a couple of bottles on the way then.
Jack: Good idea. Do we have enough matches?
Sara: Yes, we have enough matches, but we don't have many batteries.
Jack: That's fine, we have a few spare batteries in the drawer.
Sara: Great. Is there a little firewood at the campsite already?
Jack: I'm not sure, but there's usually a little wood near the fire pit.
Sara: Perfect, let's finish packing and go!
