Language Focus
We use these words to talk about quantity – how much or how many of something there is.
| Word | When we use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| some | Positive sentences (countable & uncountable) | We need some chairs for the dining room. We have some paint. |
| any | Negative sentences and questions | We don't have any furniture yet. Is there any space in this room? |
| no | Another way to say "not any" (with "is/are") | There's no paint left for the wall. (= There isn't any paint.) |
| a lot of | A large quantity (countable & uncountable) | We have a lot of boxes in the new flat. We have a lot of space. |
| too many | Countable nouns – more than we need (a problem!) | There are too many boxes near the front door today! |
| too much | Uncountable nouns – more than we need (a problem!) | There is too much paint on the kitchen floor today! |
| how many | A question about countable nouns | How many boxes do we need to unpack today? |
| how much | A question about uncountable nouns | How much furniture do we need for the flat? |
Remember: countable nouns have a plural form (one box, two boxes). Uncountable nouns do not (furniture, not "two furnitures" – even though it means many things!).

Tom: Welcome to our new flat! Do we have any boxes left to unpack?
Amy: Yes, we have some boxes in the kitchen still.
Tom: How many boxes do we have in the kitchen?
Amy: We have twelve boxes in the kitchen.
Tom: Is there any furniture in the living room yet?
Amy: No, there isn't any furniture in the living room now.
Tom: How much furniture do we need for this room?
Amy: We need a sofa and two chairs for this room.
Tom: There is a lot of space in this new flat.
Amy: Yes, but there are too many boxes near the door!
Tom: OK, let's move them to the bedroom instead.
Amy: There's no paint left for the kitchen wall.
Tom: Let's buy some paint at the shop tomorrow.
