Language Focus
We use these words to talk about quantity – how much or how many of something there is.
| Word | When we use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| some | Positive sentences (countable & uncountable) | We need some sandwiches for the picnic. We have some lemonade. |
| any | Negative sentences and questions | We don't have any juice today. Is there any lemonade in the bag? |
| no | Another way to say "not any" (with "is/are") | There's no shade under this tree. (= There isn't any shade.) |
| a lot of | A large quantity (countable & uncountable) | We have a lot of sandwiches in the basket. We have a lot of lemonade. |
| too many | Countable nouns – more than we need (a problem!) | There are too many people near our favourite tree today! |
| too much | Uncountable nouns – more than we need (a problem!) | There is too much rubbish near the picnic tables today! |
| how many | A question about countable nouns | How many sandwiches do we need for the picnic? |
| how much | A question about uncountable nouns | How much water do we need for the walk? |
Remember: countable nouns have a plural form (one sandwich, two sandwiches). Uncountable nouns do not (water, not "two waters").

Sam: Let's have a picnic in the park today.
Ella: OK! Do we have any sandwiches for the picnic?
Sam: Yes, we have some sandwiches in the basket.
Ella: How many sandwiches do we have in the basket?
Sam: We have eight sandwiches in the basket.
Ella: Is there any water for the picnic today?
Sam: No, there isn't any water in the bag right now.
Ella: How much water do we need for the picnic?
Sam: We need two big bottles of water.
Ella: There are a lot of people in the park this afternoon.
Sam: Yes, there are too many people near our favourite tree!
Ella: OK, let's find another place under a different tree.
Sam: There's no rubbish bin near this part of the park.
Ella: Let's put our rubbish in a bag and take it home.
