Language Focus

We use these words to talk about quantity – how much or how many of something there is.

Word	When we use it	Example
some	Positive sentences (countable & uncountable)	I need some T-shirts. We have some shampoo.
any	Negative sentences and questions	I don't have any sunscreen. Is there any shampoo?
no	Another way to say "not any" (with "is/are")	There's no toothpaste. (= There isn't any toothpaste.)
a lot of	A large quantity (countable & uncountable)	We have a lot of T-shirts. We have a lot of shampoo.
too many	Countable nouns – more than we need (a problem!)	We have too many socks – twenty of them!
too much	Uncountable nouns – more than we need (a problem!)	There is too much sunscreen in this bottle!
how many	A question about countable nouns	How many socks do you need?
how much	A question about uncountable nouns	How much sunscreen do we need?

Remember: countable nouns have a plural form (one T-shirt, two T-shirts). Uncountable nouns do not (shampoo, not "two shampoos").

Mum: Have you packed your suitcase?

Child: Yes. Do I need any T-shirts?

Mum: Yes, pack some T-shirts.

Child: How many T-shirts do I need?

Mum: You need four T-shirts.

Child: Is there any sunscreen in the bag?

Mum: No, there isn't any sunscreen. We need some.

Child: How much sunscreen do we need?

Mum: We need one bottle.

Child: I have a lot of socks already.

Mum: Yes, you have too many socks!

Child: OK, no more socks today.

Mum: There's no toothpaste in the bag.

Child: Let's get some toothpaste.
