Language Focus
We use these words to talk about quantity – how much or how many of something there is.
| Word | When we use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| some | Positive sentences (countable & uncountable) | We need some apples. We have some milk. |
| any | Negative sentences and questions | We don't have any bread. Is there any milk? |
| no | Another way to say "not any" (with "is/are") | There's no sugar. (= There isn't any sugar.) |
| a lot of | A large quantity (countable & uncountable) | We have a lot of apples. We have a lot of rice. |
| too many | Countable nouns – more than we need (a problem!) | We have too many biscuits – twenty of them! |
| too much | Uncountable nouns – more than we need (a problem!) | There is too much sugar in this tea! |
| how many | A question about countable nouns | How many eggs do we need? |
| how much | A question about uncountable nouns | How much milk do we need? |
Remember: countable nouns have a plural form (one egg, two eggs). Uncountable nouns do not (milk, not "two milks").

Mum: Yes, we need some apples.
Child: How many apples do we need?
Mum: We need six apples.
Child: Is there any milk in the bag?
Mum: No, there isn't any milk. We need some.

Mum: We need two bottles.
Child: We have a lot of biscuits already.
Mum: Yes, we have too many biscuits!
Child: OK, no more biscuits today.
Mum: There's no sugar in the bag.
