Simple Past

Use for completed actions at a specific, finished time.

  • The time is stated or clearly implied.
  • The period is completely over.
  • No connection to the present moment.
She resigned from her post in 2019.
He pursued his doctorate for four years before dropping out.
Did they investigate the matter last year?

Present Perfect

Use when the past connects to the present: experience, recent result, or ongoing situation.

  • No specific finished time given.
  • Result or relevance matters now.
  • Period may still be ongoing.
She has resigned. (We need to find a replacement.)
He has pursued this cause for ten years. (He still does.)
Have they ever investigated a case like this?

B1 Focus: for, since and unfinished time

At B1 level it is important to understand how for and since work with the present perfect, and how to recognise whether a time period is finished or still ongoing.

Simple Past: verb in past form (regular +ed / irregular own form)
