Simple Past vs Past Continuous

Simple Past

Use for a completed action that happened at a specific moment in the past.

  • The action started and finished.
  • Often interrupts a longer action.
She ran into the room.
The phone rang.
He sat down quickly.

Past Continuous

Use for an action in progress at a specific time in the past.

  • The action was already happening.
  • Often gives background context.
She was running when it started to rain.
The phone was ringing when I arrived.
He was sitting by the window all morning.

Using them together โ€” when and while

We often use the two tenses together in one sentence. The past continuous gives the background action; the simple past interrupts it.

When she arrived, I was cooking dinner. (cooking = in progress; arrived = interruption)
I was listening to music when the power went out.
While he was driving home, it started to rain.
They were sitting in the garden when the storm started.

when โ†’ usually before the simple past (the interrupting action)
while โ†’ usually before the past continuous (the action in progress)
