PAST DEDUCTION — must have / can't have / might have
Use past modal deductions to reason about events that have already happened, using available evidence.
+The budget was approved without question — they must have been under pressure to move quickly.
–He can't have read the terms — he agreed to conditions that no experienced lawyer would accept.
~The variance in the results might have been caused by an inconsistency in the sampling method.
💡 Three degrees: must have (almost certain) → might have (possible) → can't have (almost certainly not).
NEEDN'T HAVE / DIDN'T NEED TO
Both mean something was unnecessary — the distinction is whether the action took place.
+You needn't have cancelled your afternoon — the meeting finished in thirty minutes. (you cancelled, unnecessarily)
+She didn't need to chase them — they replied before she had a chance to. (she didn't chase)
⚠️ Needn't have + past participle = the wasted action happened.
Didn't need to = it was unnecessary and may or may not have happened.
WAS / WERE ABLE TO
Use was/were able to for a specific, concrete success — not general past ability.
+After months of deadlock, the parties were able to reach a binding agreement.
+The forensic team was able to recover deleted files from the hard drive.
💡 Could = general ability in the past. Was/were able to = something was actually achieved in a specific situation.
HAD BETTER
Use had better for strong, situation-specific advice — more urgent than should, with an implied threat.
+You had better verify these figures before the audit team arrives.
–We had better not release this publicly until legal have signed off on it.
💡 Had better implies a specific near-term risk. It is not used for general advice or long-term recommendations.
MODAL PASSIVES
Modal passives appear throughout formal writing — focusing on the action rather than who performs it.
+Any amendments must be submitted in writing and countersigned.
+The data should have been anonymised before the external review.
+The original files may have been overwritten during the server migration.
