Past Perfect

B2 Upper Intermediate

The third conditional imagines a different outcome for a past situation that cannot be changed.

+If I had taken that job, I would have moved to New York.
+If they hadn't invested wisely, they would have lost everything.
+She wouldn't have succeeded if she hadn't worked so hard.
✏️ Form: If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle
💡 Both could / might / should can replace would: "If he had asked, I could have helped."

We use wish + Past Perfect to express regret about a past situation — something we want to have been different.

+I wish I had studied harder at university.
+She wishes she hadn't said that — it hurt him deeply.
+I wish we had left earlier — we missed the whole first half.
⚠️ Compare:
"I wish I studied harder." = I wish I studied harder now (present / ongoing regret).
"I wish I had studied harder." = Regret about a specific past situation that cannot be changed.

A mixed conditional combines a past condition with a present result — or a present condition with a past result.

+If I had taken that job, I would be in Tokyo now. (past condition → present result)
+If she were more organised, she wouldn't have missed the deadline. (present condition → past result)
💡 Mixed conditionals link different time frames. The most common type uses Past Perfect in the if-clause and would + base form in the result clause.

These past modal structures all use the Past Perfect pattern and express different attitudes about the past.
