Past Continuous

B2 Upper Intermediate

Both tenses describe actions in progress, but they refer to different points in time.

TenseMeaningExample
Past ContinuousIn progress at a specific past momentShe was working when I arrived.
Past Perfect ContinuousIn progress up until a past moment (emphasises duration)She had been working for six hours when I arrived.
⚠️ The Past Perfect Continuous adds information about how long something had been happening before another past event.

In longer narratives, three past tenses often combine to show different layers of time.

+When I arrived at the office, my colleagues were discussing a report that someone had leaked to the press. The story broke that morning.
💡 Past Perfect = furthest back in time (what had already happened)
Past Continuous = what was in progress at the key moment
Simple Past = the main events of the story

The Past Continuous can be used for emphasis — to stress the intensity or nature of an action.

+It wasn't raining — it was pouring.
+She wasn't just crying — she was sobbing.
+He wasn't walking — he was sprinting.
💡 This structure corrects or intensifies a description. It is common in spoken narrative and literary writing.

At B2 level, the Past Continuous appears in more nuanced and literary contexts.

+The city was sleeping when the earthquake struck.
+She was beginning to suspect that something was wrong.
+Tensions were rising throughout the meeting, until finally someone walked out.
💡 At this level, the Past Continuous is used not just for physical actions, but for gradual changes in state, mood, and situation.
