Past Perfect

B1 Intermediate

When we report what someone said in the past, present tenses shift back to the Past Perfect.

Direct: "I have finished my report."
Reported: She said she had finished her report.
Direct: "I saw the film."
Reported: He told me he had seen the film.
✏️ In reported speech, the Simple Past and Present Perfect both shift back to the Past Perfect.
💡 The Past Perfect is the "backshifted" form — it moves the tense one step further into the past.

At B1 level, more complex time expressions work with the Past Perfect to show sequence and timing.

ExpressionMeaningExample
by the timebefore a particular momentBy the time I arrived, they had left.
as soon asimmediately afterAs soon as she had spoken, she regretted it.
onceafter completing somethingOnce he had signed the contract, there was no going back.
untilup to a point in timeI hadn't realised until she told me.

The third conditional talks about imaginary situations in the past — things that didn't happen.

+If I had known, I would have called you.
+If she had studied harder, she would have passed.
+If we hadn't missed the train, we wouldn't have been late.
✏️ Form: If + Past Perfect, would have + past participle
💡 Both things are imaginary — neither the condition nor the result actually happened.
⚠️ Remember: The if-clause always uses the Past Perfect. The result clause uses would have + past participle.

In longer narratives, the Past Perfect gives background context, while the Simple Past moves the story forward.

+She walked into the room and immediately noticed that someone had moved her things.
+By the time the police arrived, the thief had already escaped through the back window.
💡 Use Past Perfect for what had already happened before the main story events. Use Simple Past for the main events themselves.
