Past Continuous

B1 Intermediate

These two tenses are often used together, but they have different meanings.

TenseUseExample
Past ContinuousAn action that was in progress (ongoing)I was reading when she called.
Simple PastA completed action or eventShe called at 9pm.
⚠️ Compare:
"I read a book last night." = I finished it. (completed action)
"I was reading a book last night." = I was in the middle of it. (action in progress)

Certain time expressions are commonly used with the Past Continuous.

ExpressionUseExample
just astwo actions at exactly the same momentJust as I was leaving, the phone rang.
at that momentemphasises a specific point in timeAt that moment, everyone was staring at me.
all day / all eveningshows a continuous action over a long periodShe was working all day.
stillshows the action continued longer than expectedAt midnight, they were still talking.

At B1 level, we combine tenses in longer, more complex sentences.

+Just as I was stepping out of the door, I realised I had forgotten my keys.
+While she was preparing the presentation, her colleagues were setting up the room.
+He was still working when everyone else had already left the office.
💡 At this level, focus on the relationship between tenses — which action was longer, which was shorter, which happened first.

The choice of tense changes the meaning of a sentence.

+"I was talking to her when he arrived." → I started talking before he arrived. The talking was already in progress.
+"I talked to her when he arrived." → These two events happened at roughly the same time, or one prompted the other.
⚠️ The difference is subtle but important. The Past Continuous emphasises that the action was already in progress when something else happened.
StructureExample
Ongoing action interruptedI was sleeping when the alarm rang.
Two simultaneous actionsWhile she was talking, I was taking notes.
Background + eventIt was raining heavily when the game started.
With just asJust as I was falling asleep, the baby cried.
With stillThey were still arguing at midnight.
