Modal Verbs — will, would, shall, need to / needn't

WILL / WON'T

Use will for things you are certain about in the future, and for decisions made at the moment of speaking.

+The doors will open at nine.
+A: There's no milk left. B: I 'll pick some up on the way home.
–They won't release the figures until the end of the quarter.
✏️ Form: subject + will / won't + base verb
💡 Won't often signals strong refusal or a firm negative prediction.
WOULD

Use would in hypothetical contexts, polite requests, and to express preferences.

+I would take the job if the salary were higher.
+Would you mind sending that to me in writing?
+He would rather meet on Tuesday than Monday.
💡 Would softens requests and makes them more polite. It is also used in hypothetical sentences with if.
SHALL

Use shall with I / we to offer, suggest, or ask what to do.

+Shall I get you a copy of the agenda?
+Shall we continue after lunch?
✏️ Shall is used with I and we only, and is more common in British English.
NEED TO / NEEDN'T

Use need to for things that are required and needn't for things that are not.

+You need to show ID at the gate.
–You needn't explain yourself — I trust your judgement.
⚠️ Needn't = it is not necessary. Mustn't = it is not allowed. Very different!
