Proper nouns, fixed phrases, exceptions and more
You already know the basics. At B1 level, we look at the trickier rules — especially with proper nouns, fixed phrases, and special uses of THE.
Use THE with: rivers, mountain ranges, oceans, seas, deserts, groups of islands, and some countries (plural or containing "republic/kingdom").
➤ the Nile | the Alps | the Pacific Ocean | the Sahara | the Philippines | the United Kingdom
No article with: most countries, cities, lakes, individual mountains, continents.
➤ France | Dublin | Lake Victoria | Mount Everest | Europe
When you use a place for its main purpose, use no article. When you refer to the specific building, use THE.
➤ She goes to school every day. (she is a student — purpose)
➤ I went to the school to speak to her teacher. (specific building)
➤ He is in hospital. (he is a patient) | I walked past the hospital. (building)
After What and Such, use A or AN before a singular countable noun.
➤ What a great idea! | What an interesting question! | Such a kind person!
Many common expressions use no article. These are fixed phrases — learn them as chunks.
➤ by car / by bus / by train | at home / at work / at school
➤ go to bed / in bed | on foot | watch television | have breakfast / lunch / dinner
Use THE + adjective (no noun) to talk about a whole group of people.
➤ The elderly often need extra support. (= elderly people in general)
➤ The rich and the poor live very different lives. | The unemployed receive benefits.

| Rivers / ranges / oceans | the Amazon, the Andes | — |
| Most countries / cities | the UK, the USA | France, Tokyo |
| Institutions (purpose) | the hospital (building) | in hospital (as patient) |
| Exclamations | — | What a day! Such an effort! |
