A, An, The — and when to use No Article
You already know A, AN, and THE. At A2 level, we also learn when to use no article at all. This page reviews all four rules.
Use a before a consonant sound. Use it for jobs, to describe something for the first time, or for one of many.
➤ She is a nurse. | I need a new phone. | He has a good idea.
Use an before a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). Remember: it is the SOUND not always the letter that matters.
➤ an hour* | an honest* person | an umbrella | an invitation
Use the when: you mentioned it before, both people know which one you mean, or there is only one.
➤ The President is coming. | I love the coffee in this café. | Turn left at the traffic lights.
Use no article with plural nouns and uncountable nouns when you are speaking in general — not about a specific thing.
➤ I love dogs. (= dogs in general) | Water is important. | She speaks Spanish.
➤ He plays football. | I drink coffee every morning. | Life is short.
| Article | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A | Consonant sound / any one / first mention | a car, a doctor, a good book |
| AN | Vowel sound / any one / first mention | an idea, an hour, an easy exam |
| THE | Specific / known / unique / superlatives | the best film, the station |
| — (none) | General plurals / uncountable nouns | Dogs are friendly. I like music. |

2. "She is the doctor" is the correct way to describe someone's job.
3. We say "an hour" because the letter H is silent, so it starts with a vowel sound.

5. We use "the" with superlatives. For example: "She is the best student in the class."
6. "He plays a football every weekend" is correct.
7. "It is a university" is correct — not "an university".
