English Articles – A2

A, An, The — and when to use No Article

📖 Articles: A, An, The — and No Article

You already know A, AN, and THE. At A2 level, we also learn when to use no article at all. This page reviews all four rules.

🔵 A — one of many (consonant sound)

Use a before a consonant sound. Use it for jobs, to describe something for the first time, or for one of many.

➤ She is a nurse.  |  I need a new phone.  |  He has a good idea.

💡 A university → /j/ sound (consonant sound) → use A, not AN

🟠 AN — one of many (vowel sound)

Use an before a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u). Remember: it is the SOUND not always the letter that matters.

➤ an hour*  |  an honest* person  |  an umbrella  |  an invitation

💡 *"hour" — the h is silent → starts with vowel sound /aʊ/ → AN hour

🟢 THE — specific or unique

Use the when: you mentioned it before, both people know which one you mean, or there is only one.

➤ The President is coming.  |  I love the coffee in this café.  |  Turn left at the traffic lights.

💡 THE + superlatives: the best, the tallest, the most expensive

⚪ NO ARTICLE — general statements

Use no article with plural nouns and uncountable nouns when you are speaking in general — not about a specific thing.

➤ I love dogs. (= dogs in general)  |  Water is important.  |  She speaks Spanish.

➤ He plays football.  |  I drink coffee every morning.  |  Life is short.

💡 Compare: "I love the coffee in this café." (specific coffee) vs "I love coffee." (coffee in general)
