Past Perfect

A2 Elementary

When two things happened in the past, we use the Past Perfect for the earlier action and the Simple Past for the later action.

When I arrived (Simple Past = later), she had already left (Past Perfect = earlier).
He felt better after he had taken the medicine.
💡 Timeline: Past Perfect → Simple Past → Now
The Past Perfect always refers to the action that happened first.
⚠️ Compare:
"She left when I arrived." = She left at the same time I arrived (or just after).
"She had left when I arrived." = She left BEFORE I arrived.

These words are common with the Past Perfect and give extra meaning.

WordPositionExample
alreadybetween had and the past participleShe had already eaten when we arrived.
justbetween had and the past participleHe had just arrived when it started.
neverbetween had and the past participleI had never tried it before.
yetend of sentence (negatives/questions)She hadn't finished yet.

We often use the Past Perfect with because to explain why something happened.

+She was tired because she hadn't slept well.
+He was happy because he had passed his exam.
+We were hungry because we hadn't eaten since morning.
💡 The because clause uses the Past Perfect to explain the cause — something that happened (or didn't happen) earlier.
