Past Continuous

A2 Elementary

We use the Past Continuous + Simple Past to show that a longer action was interrupted by a shorter one.

+I was cooking dinner when the phone rang.
+She was walking to work when it started to rain.
✏️ The Past Continuous = the longer background action (in progress).
The Simple Past = the shorter action that interrupted it.

💡 Use when before the Simple Past verb: "I was reading when he arrived."

We use while + Past Continuous to show two longer actions happening at the same time.

+While he was reading, she was cooking.
+I was listening to music while I was studying.
💡 Use while before the Past Continuous verb: "While I was eating, the TV was on."

We use the Past Continuous at the start of a story to describe the background situation.

+It was raining and the wind was blowing. Suddenly, the door opened...
+People were talking and music was playing when he walked in.
💡 The Past Continuous sets the scene. The Simple Past moves the story forward.
