Past Perfect

A1 Beginner

We use the Past Perfect to show that one thing happened before another thing in the past.

+When she arrived, I had already eaten. (I ate first. Then she arrived.)
+He had never seen snow before that day.
💡 Think of the Past Perfect as the "earlier past". It describes the action that happened first — before another past action.

had + past participle (for all subjects)

PositiveI / You / He / She / We / They had finished.
NegativeI / You / He / She / We / They hadn't finished.

✏️ had is the same for ALL subjects — I had, you had, he had, she had, we had, they had.
